Play Day!

Yesterday, I had a full on, play, fun day with three long-time friends.  We have history, and we dig it up and laugh about it. I got up early, flew to Minneapolis to meet them and we spent the day digging through junk, laughing, saying bad word to make ourselves laugh more, shopping, trending, and getting lost. We all work in the craft industry. The creative ideas thrown out during the day would have made your head explode. Then I flew home.

Meet the Human Pinball, Queen Jo, and Kathy. Kathy and I just have plain names.

 Miss Velma did not attend.

We started the day at Junk Bonanza. There were piles of junk in that place.

Very much trending in the junk artist community are old books, things made with old books, globes and maps, things made with globes and maps, and doll heads.  I am personally not too much into junking for artist endeavors, but I admit there were some awesome raw materials to be had, and some creative art as well.  My brain filled up quickly. These big flowers are made out of old book pages.

The skirt of the dress is also made of old book pages.

Not sure who was taking this home.

After a couple hours, we packed up our bags to head out, with these final words of wisdom:

We had a list of shops and stores that we visited in the afternoon.  We planned our route at lunch.

Our final stop/shop of the day was I Like You. It's an arty, gift store. It was 2.4 miles away from the stop before it and it took us an hour to get there.  Sometimes google maps is not adequate.

It had a swing! Inside the store. We finished the day with amazing food at a place with a big red elk out front, and a trip back to the airport.

Back to work.

Fashion Week Has Nothing On Us

We know that New York Fashion week is in full swing, but check out the fall shoe fashions here.  These are table decorations done by Lee Anne, the Women's Ministries Director at CBC.  Women's fall Bible studies started this morning, and she rose to the decorating challenge.

One is more fabulous than the last.

It seems that we here at CBC are all about encouraging your walk with God and we symbolize that with shoes. What else?  We are also environmentally responsible and we recycle and restyle. These shoes are on their third incarnation.

Originally, they were purchased at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. I needed 50 pair and S.A. made them affordable.

I glittered them all hot pink.  All. 50. Pair.  It was inspired.

After that, we used some of them as table decorations for a banquet. Read more here.

We sure got our 50 cents out of those pairs of shoes! What will be next for the shoes?

Learning and Remembering

NYC is in the news this week for a couple things. Mostly, it is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For my generation, there are two shocking happenings for which we ask each other, "where were you when.....?" We ask that about the day JFK was shot and now we ask that about the 9/11 attacks.

I was in mid air, flying from Detroit to Atlanta. When we landed in Atlanta, the pilot came on the PA and told us to go find a monitor. The state we found our whole country in when we deplaned was shocking, especially considering it had only been 2 hours since we got into the plane. It does not take long and it does not take many people to change the world. If only we all used this power for good.

The other thing happening in NYC this week is Fashion Week. I do not have understanding of why Fashion Week is so important. Could someone enlighten me please? I have been following some of the multitudinous reports from Fashion Week in the last couple days. Fashion seems like another word for "ridiculous garments that are in no way wearable or garments that nobody in her right mind would wear." Really. Do these garments get produced and worn?

But, I follow a little bit because trends in fashion do play into other kinds of trends that I follow. In some kind of really indirect way.

So, when I saw this bracelet, I got a good laugh. Some high fashion designer went to Michaels and bought a couple packages of wiggle eyes and embedded them in resin. Come on, it's funny.

Dorm Room Purse Name Plaques

And now a dorm room project for Niece 1! She requested name plaques of some kind for herself and her two roomies. I had fun making these!

I got these three short handled purses at the thrift store. Yes, it is my hang out lately.

To make your own purse name plaques, you need:
  • short handles leather purse(s) Mine are orange, lime green, hot pink
  • gesso
  • acrylic paint: black, white, hot pink, turquoise, orange, bright yellow, lime green
  • paint brushes: small round, medium flat
  • silk flowers on stems
  • black permanent marker (optional)
  • Tip Pen
  • clear matte spray finish
  • palette

Here is what I did:
1. Paint gesso on the area of the purse you want to decorate. Let dry. Gesso is like a primer. It hides what is underneath.

 2. Use marker to draw lines to make black and white accents. You could do this with a small brush and acrylic paint. Follow the design of the purse to make these accents.

 3. Use the flat paintbrush and black paint to make squares as desired.

 4. Using small round brush and black acrylic, print desired name on purse. Let dry.

 5. Paint different size and color circles to make flowers. Add some leaves. I freehanded all of this, you can too. When the paint is dry, add some smaller circles of other colors in the centers of larger circles.

 6.  Put the Tip Pen on the bottle of white paint. Outline flowers and leaves.  Add dots and lines as desired to bring the flowers to life.

7. Using the small round brush, add some green tendrils. Let paint dry a day. Spray a coat or two of clear finish over the paint.

Paint as many as you want. Hang them vertically on the wall. Zip the purses up. Stick some daisies in.

You could paint words instead of names:

Live Laugh Love
Hope Dreams Wishes
Pick up. Your. Clothes.

Recycled Frame/Magnet Board

Here is another thrift store purchase. It was half price, so it cost $7.  I had all of the other components at home.

Here is how I made it:
1. Take the frame apart.  Spray paint the frame hot pink.

 2. Use the cardboard photo backing. Paint 2-3 coats of magnet paint to cover the board. letting each coat dry in between. On top of that, paint the acrylic color you want to show. Mine is lime green. Let that dry.

3.  Make a border of zebra print duct tape.

 4.  Put the board back into the frame. Hot glue it in place if it doesn't have little prongs that hold it in.

5.  Hot glue big silk daisies onto magnets.

My frame already had a sawtooth hanger on it, so it was ready to go.  Cute for $7!

Follow the Rules, Please

Now that I know that I can put a list of rules into every room, I made some up for the dorm room. I personally, think it is incomplete without "No Boys Allowed."  But the room inhabitants disagreed.

Dorm Room Blackboard

Remember the Blackboard of Blossoms? This is its cousin, Bloomin' Blackboard. It is getting stuck to the dorm room wall.

It is a roll or chalkboard paper. I got it at Michaels. The paint is craft acrylic.

I selected three sizes of circle patterns: a spool, and the top and bottom of a plastic cup. I traced them onto the blackboard paper with a chalk pencil and painted.

The outlining was done with white acrylic paint and a tip pen. You could also use a paint marker.

Not sure whether the girls will hang it vertically or horizontally. It could go either way. Pretty cute for $4.99 and 2 hours of designing and painting.
