Trendy Kid's Art

 So, you know that I am working on the team to makeover a lot of kid's bedrooms, and that we do not have a money tree. That means we make some things ourselves. Of course, I love that. 

 So, this morning, I went to Hobby Lobby and HomeGoods to see what is currently trendy in wall art for kid's rooms. Why re-invent the wheel? And I got some good ideas!
 The background is newspaper or book pages. I think you could draw over the top with paint, markers, or even crayons. 
 Encouraging words.
 This is a framed piece of paper. The words are on the top of the glass. It gives it depth.

 Felt flowers are added to the painting. It could be any element done in felt, fabric, paper, burlap, newspaper, anything.

 Another with book pages background and design on the glass.

 An open wood frame, no backing, with wood shapes filling the space. You see through to the wall color.

 Background on square canvas is painted or is a piece of scrapbook paper.  The design is wood, but it could be paper or canvas, attached with pop dots.

 Background is a patchwork of scrapbook paper. The fire engine is painted.

 Song lyrics. This would be really meaningful to give to a child with the words to the song her Mother sings to her.
 I thought this was a canvas until I got close enough to touch it. It is a double layer of window screen. Painted. It is really lightweight, and inexpensive. It made me very excited because I have a roll of window screen in the garage!
Even better, it can be cut into shapes. Love this!

 Now, I have some basic ideas, and it is time to use my Vitamin C!

Jewelry Trend - Chains

 Chains have been trendy in jewelry for a couple years now. And, that trend has morphed along the way. It began with nondescript silver chain. After that, chains in mixed metals were popular. Then different shapes of links in chains was trendy. Late last year, the trend turned to tiny tiny chains, and lots of them in one piece. You can still see this at retail.

Now, this spring, the trend in jewelry chains is large. large and chunky. I took these pics today at Macy's. There were a lot more, but you get the idea, right?

If you follow trends, you will find that some of them are predictable. If not predictable, they are easily explained. A lot of times, a trend will swing 180 degrees to the very opposite. I guess we get tired of the trend and want to get as far from it as we can, next.


For instance, turquoise was a trendy color for a couple years. Now, this year, coming off turquoise, the color of the year is tangerine. Those two colors are opposite each other on the color wheel.


And chains.....tiny to huge.


This does not hold true of every trend, because many times trends come out of nowhere. But when a trend has really worked, it tends to undergo change to something new instead of going away completely. 


Keep watch and see. It can help you be a step ahead.

Trend: Colorblocking

Colorblocking is one of the current fashion trends for spring and summer. It speaks for itself, I think. Here is a little bit about colorblocking, anyway.



 I always wonder how fashion trends translate to jewelry trends...if they do at all. And, in researching, I found that colorblocking is a natural for jewelry, especially the enamelling trend that is also current.




Seems like colorblocking can be subtle or bold.

Trendy Seed Beads

 Every couple months, I do some jewelry trending by going to Kohls and Macys. Both have enough national brands so that when I see the same thing across many brands, I know there is some trending!


As always, I see a handful of really obvious trends. On this trip, the trends included lots of pearls, tiny tiny chains, and sparkly crystals. But, for this post, I am focusing on seed beads.





 Earrings. We also see the tiny chains in two of these.


 Bracelets.  Seed beads glued on...


 Combined with lots of other things....


Stitched in a pattern...

 On elastic....


 On memory wire...



 Necklaces.




 Good news is that making seed bead jewelry is fairly inexpensive. And the color range is huge. 


Take a jewelry trending trip yourself and see what you find.

White Heart Beads

 Once in awhile I hit on something that is just fabulous. Don't you LOVE when that happens to you? I made these beads and a bracelet using them for Bead Design Studio Magazine. They featured the bracelet in the December issue, and there are downloadable instructions on their web site.


If you are following trends for fashion and jewelry, you will see fringe is definitely on the list. 




Most of the fringe jewelry I see is very hippie-like, including bead fringe, and I wanted something more up to date. So, I included the faceted, shiny metal beads and glow-y white heart beads.

Trend Report-Opposites Day

 It is odd that two very opposite things are trending at the same time, but they are. I guess it is because they are desired by two very different subsets of people on this earth. The first is overexpensive luxury items. AKA, stuff for people with more money than sense. It almost made me sick looking at these, thinking about how much money is being spent that could be going for some real good in the world.


So, this Louis Vuitton purse goes for $35,000. You might be able to get your cell phone in it. 


 This is a Japanese watermelon that cost $6,100. It looks pretty much like any garden variety watermelon, doesn't it? 


 An 8.4 million dollar (yes, million) iPad made of gold. How many iPads could the owner buy for school kids?


 And a $445, 000 shirt. Comes in its own vault. 


 And on the opposite end of that is the green movement, also called upcycling. In my day, we called it trash to treasure. Only, I think we have lost sight of treasure in an effort to use garbage up.


This is exactly what you think it is.  Want one?


Ow!


 Really? Doesn't that hurt to wear?

 Used wall hooks, must be heavy.  And scratchy at the bottoms.


 This one wins my vote. I think it is clever, functional, and cute.

Guess they don't know this is against the law and you can be ticketed for it?
