The Art Wall

One wall.  All of the pieces of art I have been working on. You will have to click on it to see detail. I did not paint the gorgeous piece with blue flowers. It is by a generous friend who offered it as a donation.

I love art groupings. One thing that makes me crazy is if you have four pieces of art and you put one on each wall in the room. The pieces get lost.  This makes a statement. Except, what is with that fire alarm in the middle of my wall????

It looks good on the dining room wall, since the wall is HUGE.

Procrastination Art

Tonight, while I was procrastinating packing for my mission trip, I painted. This is a different style than I normally do, so it was experimentation for me. In the end, I like parts of it and see other parts that I wish I had done differently.

The canvas was basecoated blue. Then I added torn paper shapes.

 The addition of some paint.

 And then some detailing.

A little texture.

I wish there were more flowers, I think I could add some tomorrow. I wish I had put the pot lower on the canvas. It looks like it has been cut off at the top. And I am also wondering if I need to add more to it. I will take another look tomorrow and see what comes to me.

Eat Your Vegetables

Here are some rules for the dining room. Next week, on my mission trip, my team and I will be working on a community dining room in a women's shelter. It was hard for me not to put in some rules like, "bark like a dog." or "wear a big hat."

I was inspired by lots of signs I have been seeing online for family rules. Most use letters printed from the computer, or letter stickers. Mine is all paint. I found this one on Pinterest. Go there and search for family rules to see many different signs.

My canvas is 24" x 36". I basecoated green and used masking tape to paint different color stripes.

Then I used a round brush to print the rules on the stripes. I could still add, "do the dessert dance."

There is a good sign brewing in my mind for Girl World Rules......

Suffer For Your Art

I beaded the straps of these flip flops last year. I wore them once and they have been in my closet since. They are very pretty, if I do say so myself.

But, they hurt like $*^%$#&*. And apparently I am too lazy to fix them. Maybe I will frame them for an art piece.

I wrapped the wire and beads to cover the whole strap.  I should have stopped partway up because when I walk and the bottom of my foot steps on the wire and beads...yeeeeeeeeow! It  is worse than walking across gravel barefooted.

So, I urge you to make a gorgeous pair of beaded flip flops like these, but STOP before the end. I think you have to try them on and see where you need to stop.

Jewelry Trends Fall 2011

I have been doing a little research on jewelry trends for fall and winter. When I do trend research, I always find some crazy stuff that the experts call trends, that I don't think anyone would really wear. I am skipping that stuff.  And I am sharing what I think is real.

  • A continuing trend....huge rings.  Of all kinds and materials.

  •  Bangles and cuffs, also not new, but getting larger...in size. You are going to have to get and use a set of dumbbells so that you can wear these things. Look for these big bracelets to trend into chokers. You won't be able to move your neck, but you will look fabulous, darling.

  •  Square bangles.  Why not? We have seen every round bangle that could ever be designed. It is a logical way for the trend to go.

  •  Feathers. I don't think I will be wearing feathers, but, they are emerging anyway. I have already made the Ke$ha hair feathers for Niece 3.  It is a mega trend with the high school/college crowd here in Michigan.  How about where you live? Girls go to a salon and have them woven into their hair, at great expense. Crazy. Niece 3 has them on clips. They look exactly the same for less than $1.

  •  Fringe. I have loved fringe ever since I was a four year old cowgirl.  It is emerging on everything. Get ready.

  • And the most important trend for fall....ankle length earrings. Glamorous.

There. Now we are ahead of the curve and know what to look for this fall.

P.S.  I was kidding about the ankle length earrings. HOOT! Can you imagine?

New Journal Cover

I am having one of those Kim-renowned super duper busy weeks.
  • I prepared and defended my thesis this morning...and passed with flying colors. My committee chair wants me to come to the university and give a seminar, and then take it on the road to national worship conferences. Stinking cool.
  • I have a couple nice big jobs pending, I so love that!
  • I am trying to prep for my mission trip which is in 12 days. I am buying online a lot, but still have other shopping and prepping to do. I now know everything you might ever need to know about all available flooring. Just ask me.
  • Have two bracelet classes this week and a jewelry sale.
  • Sweating a lot. Seriously, I thought I moved back to Michigan and it feels like I still live in Texas.
  • Oh, and I am trying to get a few hours of sleep in too.

But, I did set aside a couple hours to do a little something fun. So, Sunday night I made a journal, and mindlessly painted backgrounds on all the pages with my favorite colors. It was relaxing.

And I did one page, I guess it will be the cover. I did a little doodling and added some paper and paint. The flowers started as circles of paper cut out with pinking shears. If you look closely, you can see the pinked edge. It adds a bit of texture. Then I added some swoops of paint with a big round brush. That added some depth. Pretty OK for a midnight, eyes slamming shut, project.

I am feeling thankful that God is blessing my mission trip so much and so visibly.

  • People are supporting us with money and encouragement.
  • We had 65 women come to a bead soup party and we raised a lot of money.
  • A group of women at church paid for the flooring we need to install.
  • I got a great discount on seven cabinets that I bought to build and install.
  • One team member bought 4 high chairs on her account that gets free shipping.
  • Three amazing women, out of the blue, volunteered to take care of all of our meals for us during the trip. It is such a huge relief not to have to worry about feeding everyone on top of 4 full days of projects and the logistics involved in all of that.
  • And so on, it has been going like that for everything.
God is blessing us and preparing our needs to do His good work!

I need my Vitamin C x 100 this week.

Doodling is the Thing!

I was inspired this week to try the bleach doodling thing for wall art.

Three things inspired me.

  • The doodling trend. Seems like everywhere I look, someone is doing some amazing doodling.  These are a few of the pins I have on my doodling board on Pinterest. I have saved the doodles I like best, but there are TONS more great ones on Pinterest.  Just search doodling.

Not being able to ignore all that inspiration, I did this. I wrapped a canvas board in green/white dot fabric and hot glued it on the back. Then I doodled with a bleach pen. As soon as I was done doodling, I hosed it off with my kitchen sink sprayer. Now I am thinking about doing a huge one like Alisa, and adding some color back in after the bleaching.

Oh yeah, I tried bleaching a painted canvas. No go. Apparently, you can't bleach dried paint.
