Daisy Canvas Collage Tutorial

I find it important to make time to create, just for fun...or therapy...or creative exercise. It's good for me and good for you too! So, last night, I had nothing pressing, a gentle rain was falling, the windows were open, and I sat at my table to create. It was relaxing.

You know I really like to collage. It combines some of the things that I love about designing and crafting: color, painting, layering, doodling, and tearing paper.

Here is what you need to make this project. But, you know you should substitute materials and colors if you want, to make it your own.
  • four 6"x6" canvases
  • acrylic paint: sky blue, turquoise blue, turquoise green, white, lime green
  • seasponge
  • Fiskars punches: XL oopsie daisy, XL cloud
  • Fiskars deckle Tear edger
  • Scrapbook paper: assorted green prints, 2 deep pink prints, brown print, aqua print
  • small piece of bubble wrap, about 4" x 6"
  • Mod Podge for paper
  • paintbrushes: large flat, small round
  • scraps of 140 lb watercolor paper
  • 6 Pop Dots
  • white craft glue
  • small buttons: 6 turquoise, 1 lime green
  • fine point marker: black
  • tape
  • palette

I started with my favorite color palette, 3 shades of turquoise. Pour out a little puddle of each. Dip the flat brush into 2 or 3 colors at once.

Brush on to the canvas. Try to just apply the paint, not brush back and forth on it. This will give you visible striations of color.

Do all four canvases and let them dry. Arrange them in the way you want them to be in your design.

I love layered backgrounds on my collage. Clouds will be one layer. Using the cloud punch, make two strips of punched out clouds. Tape them together. Use this as a stencil. Save the punched out clouds for another project.

On your palette, pour out white and sky blue. I did not want the clouds to stand out too much, so I added blue to the white. Dip your damp (not wet) sponge into both colors. Dab on the palette to mix the colors on the sponge.

Dap the sponge over the stencil to print clouds wherever you want them.

Tear strips of green paper about 1" wide. I had three greens. Tear the strips into 1" square pieces.

Brush Mod Podge on canvas at bottom, Place paper squares over wet glue. Smooth with fingers.

Draw a vase shape on the back of brown paper. Cut out and Mod Podge on lower right canvas.

Brush turquoise blue paint on bubbles of bubble wrap.

Print randomly on left and right sides of canvases. The dots are another layer.

Also tear one 12" x 1" strip of aqua paper. Cut it in half and Mod Podge it to the left sides of canvases....about an inch from the left edge.

Put a dot of lime green paint where you want to build your three flowers. Brush lime green paint on the very edge of the tearing tool. Print a starburst of 12 spokes.

Make a starburst around each dot.

Using the daisy punch, punch out a total of 11 daisies, using both pink papers.

Wrap each petal around the skinny end of round brush. This makes the daisies dimensional.

Assemble daisies in vase with pop dots between layers. Use white glue to attach buttons as centers. Use the round bush and lime green paint to make stems on daisies that go down into the vase.

Mod Podge 5 remaining punched daisies on strip of aqua paper on left side. Glue on button centers.

Use marker to doodle a bit on your canvases. Small spirals at ends of starbursts.....

...squiggly lines around clouds, paper strips, daisies, up the daisy stems, the vase...wherever you want to add accents.

If you use the thick canvases like I did, they can sit on a shelf or hang on the wall.

Find some time for a creative night to yourself. It is relaxing and fulfilling.

The Art Wall

One wall.  All of the pieces of art I have been working on. You will have to click on it to see detail. I did not paint the gorgeous piece with blue flowers. It is by a generous friend who offered it as a donation.

I love art groupings. One thing that makes me crazy is if you have four pieces of art and you put one on each wall in the room. The pieces get lost.  This makes a statement. Except, what is with that fire alarm in the middle of my wall????

It looks good on the dining room wall, since the wall is HUGE.

Procrastination Art

Tonight, while I was procrastinating packing for my mission trip, I painted. This is a different style than I normally do, so it was experimentation for me. In the end, I like parts of it and see other parts that I wish I had done differently.

The canvas was basecoated blue. Then I added torn paper shapes.

 The addition of some paint.

 And then some detailing.

A little texture.

I wish there were more flowers, I think I could add some tomorrow. I wish I had put the pot lower on the canvas. It looks like it has been cut off at the top. And I am also wondering if I need to add more to it. I will take another look tomorrow and see what comes to me.

New Journal Cover

I am having one of those Kim-renowned super duper busy weeks.
  • I prepared and defended my thesis this morning...and passed with flying colors. My committee chair wants me to come to the university and give a seminar, and then take it on the road to national worship conferences. Stinking cool.
  • I have a couple nice big jobs pending, I so love that!
  • I am trying to prep for my mission trip which is in 12 days. I am buying online a lot, but still have other shopping and prepping to do. I now know everything you might ever need to know about all available flooring. Just ask me.
  • Have two bracelet classes this week and a jewelry sale.
  • Sweating a lot. Seriously, I thought I moved back to Michigan and it feels like I still live in Texas.
  • Oh, and I am trying to get a few hours of sleep in too.

But, I did set aside a couple hours to do a little something fun. So, Sunday night I made a journal, and mindlessly painted backgrounds on all the pages with my favorite colors. It was relaxing.

And I did one page, I guess it will be the cover. I did a little doodling and added some paper and paint. The flowers started as circles of paper cut out with pinking shears. If you look closely, you can see the pinked edge. It adds a bit of texture. Then I added some swoops of paint with a big round brush. That added some depth. Pretty OK for a midnight, eyes slamming shut, project.

I am feeling thankful that God is blessing my mission trip so much and so visibly.

  • People are supporting us with money and encouragement.
  • We had 65 women come to a bead soup party and we raised a lot of money.
  • A group of women at church paid for the flooring we need to install.
  • I got a great discount on seven cabinets that I bought to build and install.
  • One team member bought 4 high chairs on her account that gets free shipping.
  • Three amazing women, out of the blue, volunteered to take care of all of our meals for us during the trip. It is such a huge relief not to have to worry about feeding everyone on top of 4 full days of projects and the logistics involved in all of that.
  • And so on, it has been going like that for everything.
God is blessing us and preparing our needs to do His good work!

Weekend Variety

I spent the holiday weekend in the basement where it was cool and creative. Working on several different things, my creative ADD was satisfied.

First, I finished my canvas that I started during collage class last week. I have been singing this song in my head and it came out here on the canvas. Anyone know the song?  When I started this canvas, I was ready to pitch it. I had done too much dark brown on it and it was heavy looking. But, I worked and re-worked and I am now happy with it. It is not in my happiest color palette, but it is good to break out and do something a little different.

Bra strap bracelet.  Interesting or embarrassing?

And, happy Halloween! I made MANY pumpkin beads before I got some that I liked. Since I have been so collag-ey lately, I added them to a canvas board collage. You will have to wait to see that when the magazine comes out.  I wanted a funkier style of pumpkin.  Did I get that or does it just look like Fred Flintstone?

Next.  Glitter!

Collage Class

Today we had collage class in Girl World.  I had so much fun that I forgot I wanted to take pictures! I only remembered long enough to get a couple. Sigh.

It was my mission for class to come up with some different ways to make visual texture and layering with paint. We had several cool techniques that worked well.  This was one of my experiments. Last night, I found these wood scraps. They were cut off the top of table legs. I cannot even remember what I did with the table legs. Not important.

So, I glued some chunky yarn to one side of the wood.  Yeah, well, I had no glue at hand when I did this, so I used dimensional paint, it just happened to be gold glitter.  Why not? It worked great.

To use it, we painted the yarn, and printed it on the paper/canvas.

Like.  Right? You could make this in all kinds of patterns.  It boggles... and inspires. The experiment was a success.

So, here are some pics of projects in process. Each student worked on a canvas and a watercolor paper journal. This is the front cover of a journal. A hole was made to show the art inside. Love it.

Greens for the background. Love how she added texture by sponging over a piece of cutout scrapbook paper. Nice.

This is my canvas. At this stage, it had layers added, layers subtracted, and different layers added. Sometimes it takes a while to find my happy place.

Lettering in the journal. She was very brave in lettering freehand.  Looks great!

She did most of this with paint. She painted the trees with a negative application. That means she put paint on the canvas and removed it with the brush.  See I told you I had fun. It was neat to watch what everyone was doing and trying.

Finished canvas: paint and paper. Don't the birds make you smile?

I had a great time watching everyone else take their Vitamin C!

Collage with Texture

Having built up a little collage confidence from my collage exercise last week, I made one for a gift yesterday. It's a little larger, and I added some dimensional bits.

The background. This is three colors: burnt umber, off white, and purple.

Starting to add layers.

These dots are printed with bubble wrap dipped in paint.  I ended up with tiny bits of other colors in the dot because I used a piece of bubble wrap that had been used before. The previous colors, even though they were dry, came off on the canvas with the new, wet paint. Love it. In person, it is very nice.

In one corner, I laid down two chipboard pieces and sponged over them in a darker color.

The cross was made with flexible modeling paste. It can be applied right to the canvas.  But, I made the cross shape on a stencil blank and peeled it off when it was dry.  Be advised, the stuff takes a really long time to dry. Just slather it on with a palette knife and set it aside for a couple days. Then, peel it off the stencil and glue it to the canvas.

Paint right over the modeling paste.

When I thought I was finished, I felt there was kind of a big blank spot across the top of the canvas.  Remember those two chipboard pieces I used down in the corner? I glued them top center to fill in the space.

And, I deemed it finished.
